Why Intrepidus Dance?
I am so honored to be a part of Intrepidus! I could see right away not only that the dancing and choreography are amazing, but the atmosphere and friendships between dancers are too...how could I resist?! I love their mission and dedication to furthering dance education. But most of all, they welcomed me with open arms, it is exactly what I was looking for to balance my desire to dance with my full time career.
Why & when did you begin dancing?
I began dancing at the age of 7. I always had an aversion to playing sports, but my parents wanted me to find some sort of physical activity so they started me in dance classes, and I was hooked right away! I started dancing once again 5 years ago because as my favorite instructor used to say, once a dancer, always a dancer. It was still in my bones!
What styles of dance do you specialize in?
I definitely specialize in Contemporary/Modern. I was trained in ballet, jazz, and a little tap and hip hop, but I love how contemporary has grown to incorporate a bit of everything and is so open to interpretation.
Who is your dance icon & why?
I don't really have a dance icon, although at the moment Misty Copeland is such an inspiration! But I am truly inspired by the dancers and instructors I have met throughout my own life. Dancing is not an easy path to take, but these talented people find ways to pursue their love of dance and pass on that knowledge to others. That takes a lot of courage in my opinion.
Describe yourself in one word:
Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence?
Super intelligence! Or at least I could use some right now...
What is your music preference?
A little bit of this and that? I do gravitate towards music with some sort of electronic underscore. I am loving the new Jamie XX album, and still am swooning over Darkside's Psychic album from 2013. Oh, and always, always Bjork.
What's your favorite movie or TV show & why?
I am a not-so-secret anime/manga lover, so I will have to go with Princess Mononoke, from the great Hayao Miyazake. The gorgeous animation and scenery, the story and characters...so beautiful! The way Japanese mythology of nature confronts modern industrialization in the story is more relevant today than ever before. Each character and scene is perfectly drawn, seeing it as a teenager left such a deep impression. I highly recommend watching it if you haven't!
Ruby Rose!...at the moment ;)
What do you do in your spare time?
Haha, I dance! But other than dancing, I enjoy spending time with my husband Loren, my 19lb cat Maximo, and my little chickens. We are usually putzing around in the yard or watching television, most of the time with boozy beverage in hand. And of course the usual things like reading and listening to music. Oh yeah, and eating all the foods!
Do you have any phobias?
Arachnophobia!!! It's so sad, I don't like the idea of killing them since they eat all the pesky insects, but I can't stand spiders!
Lastly, what's a piece of encouragement/advice you would give to your 15-year-old self?
MacKenzie, just go for it and have confidence in yourself and your abilities, you are more talented than you think you are! Don't be afraid to speak up or speak your mind. Always keep drawing. Always keep dancing. It's okay to ask for help, but also learn to stand on your own. Oh, and don't take any advice you hear too seriously, it's most important to trust your gut!
