Why Intrepidus Dance?
I learned about Intrepidus Dance through CarliAnn Forthun, who I have had the pleasure of dancing with for a year and a half now. After thoroughly stalking their Facebook page (and being very impressed) and talking to CarliAnn about her experience with the company, I thought it might be a great fit for me! After meeting with Holly and Samantha, I could tell it would be a great fit. I am excited to dance with such powerful women and love their passion and vision for the company!
Why & when did you begin dancing?
I began dancing at the age of three. Story has it that a therapist I saw as a toddler suggested it to my parents as a way for me to increase my confidence in movement. Luckily for me, it did increase my confidence and even hooked my heart.
What styles of dance do you specialize in?
I was trained as a bun head from the very beginning, and ballet will always have a special place in my heart. I decided fairly young though that pointe shoes were not my cup of tea. During my college years I was fortunate enough to be exposed to modern and contemporary, which I would claim as my specialty now!
Who is your dance icon & why?
I have a hard time picking one dance icon. Different things strike me at different times. One performer who I have loved watching as I've grown up is Carla Korbes at PNB. I find her to be an inspirational performer. I've also really enjoyed choreography by William Forsythe and Crystal Pite.
Describe yourself in one word:
Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence?
What is your music preference?
I listen to all kinds of things. When I am cleaning and doing chores I listen to Motown. When I am just chilling I will listen to indie folk (Head and the Heart, The Lone Bellow, The Lumineers, Vance Joy). When I am in the shower or getting ready to go out, I'll blast the Taylor Swift, or Beyonce or Katy Perry or other strong female icon. When I am doing homework I'll listen to classical. And when I am driving through Seattle I'll bump up some current radio hit.
What is your favorite move or TV show & why?
Gilmore Girls is my all time favorite show. I grew up with Rory! I also love How I Met Your Mother, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Friends, and Parks and Recreation. I love a lot of movies, but a couple favorites have always been the A&E Pride and Prejudice as well as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I am also a huge documentary nerd.
Never really had one....but I would't kick Matthew Lewis out of bed!
What do you do in your spare time?
Depending on my mood I either turn into a grandmother and have crafting time, which can include any or all of the following: Knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, sewing, quilting, tatting, and attempting to learn how to use my spinning wheel. OR I turn into super active Washington native and go hiking, camping, backpacking, floating down rivers, lake swimming and if I am lucky kayaking or other boat activities.
Do you have any phobias?
I am terrified of birds. And yes I know what your next question is. And no, I have never seen, nor do I ever plan on seeing, that movie called "The Birds"
Lastly, what's a piece of encouragement/advice you would give to your 15-year-old self?
At 15, I was just starting a new high school where I had no friends. I would tell 15-year-old Ellen to stop being so shy and worried about what others thought of me.
