Why Intrepidus Dance?
I met Holly during a dance project called "A Crowd sourced Guide to Generation Y". During my first few encounters with Holly it became clear to me that she is hilarious and has a lot to offer the community as a person, choreographer, and mover. When she asked me to join her company, I had no hesitation saying yes. I'm very excited to join this group of beautiful strong women and see where this new adventure will take us!
Why & when did you begin dancing?
I began my movement career as a gymnast at the young age of two. I went on to compete for six years, when I was thirteen I had an injury that ended my gymnastics career. During my time as a gymnast, balance beam and floor were my favorite events, so naturally I went on to explore dance. I fell in love! Begged my mom to put me in every class possible: tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, modern, pointe (eventually) and even belly dancing for a short time. Two years later I declared that I was going to go to college for dance and began driving the two hours over the Cascades from Yakima to Seattle to take class at Velocity, Spectrum, and Westlake.
What styles of dance do you specialize in?
I have found my dance-style home in contemporary dance and dance improvisation including contact improvisation. I love the freedom these styles allow me to explore and push the limits of what my dancing is and can be.
Who is your dance icon & why?
I would say that my dance icons would have to be Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey, and Crystal Pite. Merce, because he was an explorer of what modern dance is and continued that exploration till his last days. Alvin Ailey was my first introduction to modern dance and more specifically to Horton Technique. The strength, poise, and lines of that technique are beautiful and true. Crystal Pite is an amazing choreographer! I have been fortunate to attend an open rehearsal and train with one of her dancers. Her approach to creating material and exploring what our body can do and wants to do is surprising and exciting to experience.
Describe yourself in one word:
Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence?
What is your music preference?
I like a wide range of music from jazz to country. Some bands and musicians I'm into right now include: Broods, The Head and the Heart, Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks (both new and old stuff), The Lumineers, Bear's Den, Sam Smith, Avicci, Beyoncé, Bon Over, Beirut and the list goes on.
What's your favorite movie or TV show & why?
Favorite movies include: Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Serenity, Forest Gump, When Harry Met Sally, The Hundred Foot Journey & The Last Mohican
Favorite TV shows include: Star Trek: Next Generation, Doctor Who, How I Met Your Mother, The Mindy Project, Gilmore Girls & Firefly.
What do you do in your spare time?
When I have spare time I like to get out of the city. Hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, or simply just hanging out at the beach any time of the year. Photography is a hobby of mine. I really enjoy bringing my camera wherever I go and seeing what cool shots I can capture.
Do you have any phobias?
I'm not sure if I have any phobias but I am definitely not a fan of big hairy spiders in my house. If they are outside, its cool, we are on their turf then.
Lastly, what's a piece of advice/encouragement you would give to your 15-year-old self?
The advice I would give my 15-year-old self is to not plan so much. Go in the direction of your passion, work as hard as you can and leave the big plans to God. It will work out, just don't hang on to the reins so tightly that you forget to enjoy the ride.
