Who are you & what do you do?
Coriolis Dance is the creative nexus by which Co-artistic Directors/Co-founders Natascha Greenwalt and Christin Call create new, post-disciplinary dance works at the intersection of all art forms. The Co-Directors have commissioned and created works for seven fully self-produced shows that curate a larger vision of the capabilities of ballet as an artistic medium with inherent technical rigor. In the 35+ works in its repertoire, Coriolis uses ballet technique as a self-aware vocabulary that, through manipulation and molding, is contextualized with contemporary issues.
Why & when did you start your company?
Coriolis Dance began in 2008 as a way to work with a variety of choreographers and challenge ourselves as performers within their unique styles and visions while getting to work within the same group of performers and have a supportive positive work environment.
What type of dance does your company focus on?
What's the most memorable dance experience your company has shared, & what made it so special?
Producing our first full length work Unfixed Arias was a three year endeavor that pushed us to our limits in multiple ways, but ultimately seeing so many different viewpoints come together and feeling that we rose to the challenge was incredibly rewarding.
Describe your company in one word:
What do you all enjoy doing when not dancing together?
Molly moons. Some times in a really tough rehearsal, we just call it and all pack it up and get ice-cream.
If you were to compare your work to a superhero, who would it be & why?
Spiderman, for one, we spent the last 3 years creating a rope web-like cocoon and two--we admire his interdisciplinary approach.
What will you be presenting/performing at the fundraiser?
Orbiting From Unfixed Arias by Natascha Greenwalt. Performed by Marissa Quimby and Natascha Greenwalt.
Why do you choose to make dance, and specifically why in Seattle?
I never quite found a place that fit the aesthetic I was wanting to work towards, so decided to try and create it. Seattle, because I appreciate the ability to be close to nature but still live in an culturally inspiring urban environment.
What are some interesting/little-known facts about you?
I keep a movement journal of peculiar things my dog does to to draw from choreographically.
