Why Intrepidus Dance?
I adored working with Holly on Prelude last spring, and jumped at the chance to keep dancing with her. One of the reasons I'm so excited about this company is that she refuses to follow the Seattle dance formula that disguises itself as experimental innovation, yet ultimately delivers similar shows one after the other. Holly's interest in using classic modern dance to discuss important ideas, and to simply show off great movement, is not only unique in Seattle, but important.
Why & when did you begin dancing?
I began dancing at age 5, because I really, truly wanted to be a ballerina. The strict ballet training I received until 8th grade made it seem like it could happen, but my body type and introduction to modern dance at that time gave me other options.
What styles of dance do you specialize in?
I'm still a girl who piqués, pliés, and arabesques around the house. Ballet is now so ingrained in my movement pattern that it will always be part of who I am. But modern and contemporary dance have dug in pretty deep- I wouldn't have a career in dance without it.
Who is your dance icon & why?
Doris Humphrey. Not only was she an incredible dancer, choreographer, artist, and pioneer, she also proved that it's possible to have a life, and a family outside of dance.
Charles Weidman is a close second. Not only do we share a home state, my modern teacher in college danced for him back in the 70s, so he's really the grandfather of my dance training.
Describe yourself in one word:
Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence?
What is your music preference?
I'm a fan of different music for different situations, but I can almost always go for something in the indie-rock category of whatever plays on the Mumford and Sons Pandora station.
What's your favorite movie or TV show & why?
How I Met Your Mother. Besides the fact that Neil Patrick Harris is my impossible future husband, this show is my happy place- not to mention a big bonding experience with my now-fiancé.
Neil Patrick Harris
What do you do in your spare time?
Right now, my spare time is spent wedding planning! I also love sneaking in a yoga class when I can, hiking, and reading.
Do you have any phobias?
I have selaphobia-a fear of strobe lights. It is a strange, sad, and very long story.
Lastly, what's a piece of advice/encouragement you would give to your 15-year-old self?
I wish I could let her know to slow down a bit. I worked so hard to get perfect grades/ become the valedictorian of my high school class. If I'd had any idea that it would be no more than a piece of trivia in my adult life, I might have focused on something else like... saving the planet. Or sleeping.
